History

Situated on the right bank of the Garonne, on a high terrace dominating the confluence area between the Dropt and the Garonne, less than 4 km from La Réole, the church of Notre-Dame is mentioned for the first time in the cartulary of La Réole in 978. However, recent archaeological studies have revealed the earlier date of the chevet. It belonged to an older building (probably second half of the 8th century - 9th century) with a plan consisting of an elongated hall terminated by a chevet with 7 bays. The excavations made it possible to reveal the connection between the chevet and the nave from the very beginning even if the elevations of the nave were modified from the 11th century onwards. Oriented, the current church, whose western façade is partly masked by a bell tower, presents a single nave of 20 m by 11 m covered with a roof structure with tie beams dating from the 16th century. It is flanked by two lateral chapels to the north: the smaller one, covered with a rib vault, dating from the 16th century, houses the baptismal fonts and is located to the west, and the larger one, dedicated to the Virgin, dates from the 17th or 18th century and is closest to the choir. To the south, the presbytery was built against the church in the 19th century.
