Historique

History
In 1722, the world's first naval medical school was inaugurated at Rochefort. Integrated into the first Marine hospital situated on the quai aux vivres, this school invented innovative teaching methods based on practice, observation and learning of theoretical knowledge. Its founder, Jean Cochon-Dupuy, campaigned for surgeons to be trained within maritime hospitals so that they could learn about anatomy, surgical operations, diseases, the composition of remedies and how to administer them. In 1781, the king decided on the construction of a new hospital. Entrusted to Pierre Toufaire, this work was completed in 1788. The hospital remained in operation until 1983 and became private property in 1989. A pavilion, which remained the property of the Navy, has housed the naval medical school since its origins. The interior arrangements develop over three levels, each floor fulfilling a precise function for teaching: - On the ground floor are located the entrance hall, the acts room and the council room, spaces for representation and teaching, where the school displays itself; - On the 1st floor, the library and its collection of works enabling theoretical knowledge to be established; - On the 2nd floor, the museum and its collections forming the eye of the pupils and serving for demonstrations. Today, this establishment open to the public since 1998 is a museum and a place of memory. Visitors discover there arrangements, decorations and collections dating from the late 18th to the 19th century.
