Historique

History
John Pennington Mellor (1833-1908), enriched by cotton trade between Brazil and Liverpool, had constructed in 1880 by architects Ralph Selden Wornum and Edward Salomon, in a large park, a vast dwelling in Anglo-Norman or Old English style, with a luxurious and highly refined eclectic interior decoration. The construction, linked to the enthusiasm of the British for the Basque coast in the 19th century, was completed in 1884. The finest factories of England, France and Germany (for the stained glass) supplied their products. Stripped of most of its furnishings, the building was sold in 1948 to the Family Allowances Fund which in 1985 made it a reception centre.
