Construit entre 1894 et 1907 (avec un agrandissement en 1960) par l'architecte biarrot Gustave Huguenin pour le baron Albert de l'Espée (1852-1918) , héritier des aciéries De Wendel, personnage atypique et misanthrope, le château d'Ilbarritz était la pièce maîtresse de tout un ensemble de constructions, s'étageant du sommet de la colline à la plage, reliées entre elles par quatre kilomètres de galeries couvertes. Le baron, qui se souciait peu de l'esthétique traditionnelle, voulait avant tout des édifices sans fioritures inutiles et fondamentalement pratiques.

History
Built between 1894 and 1907 (with an enlargement in 1960) by the Biarritz architect Gustave Huguenin for Baron Albert de l'Espée (1852-1918), heir to the De Wendel steel works, an atypical and misanthropic character, the Château d'Ilbarritz was the centrepiece of an entire ensemble of buildings, tiered from the top of the hill to the beach, linked together by four kilometres of covered galleries. The Baron, who cared little for traditional aesthetics, wanted above all buildings without unnecessary flourishes and fundamentally practical.
