Historique
"Unité d'habitation de grandeur conforme" de l'architecte Le Corbusier. Les travaux commencent en 1964, et sont achevés par l'architecte André Wogenscky, associé de Le Corbusier, en 1967. Cet immeuble, la dernière grande unité d'habitation conçue par Le Corbusier, et assez proche du modèle de Marseille (voir notice PA00081373) , est construit dans le cadre du projet Firminy-vert réalisé à l'instigation d'Eugène Claudius-Petit, maire de la ville et président de l'Office municipal des HLM. L'édifice comporte 414 logements de type HLM, ainsi qu'une école maternelle, sur trois niveaux, au sommet de l'édifice (16e étage). L'unité est construite sur pilotis et mesure 130 mètres de longueur ; la structure de l'édifice est composée de dalles et de voiles de béton ; les parois et les sols sont en béton brut de décoffrage. L'aile nord de l'immeuble, jamais occupée entièrement, est mise en réserve en 1985.

"Unit of dwelling of appropriate scale" by architect Le Corbusier. Work begins in 1964 and is completed by architect André Wogenscky, associate of Le Corbusier, in 1967. This building, the last great unit of dwelling designed by Le Corbusier, and quite close to the Marseille model (see notice PA00081373), is constructed within the framework of the Firminy-vert project carried out at the instigation of Eugène Claudius-Petit, mayor of the city and president of the Municipal Public Housing Office. The building comprises 414 public housing units, as well as a nursery school, on three levels, at the top of the building (16th floor). The unit is built on stilts and measures 130 metres in length; the structure of the building is composed of concrete slabs and shear walls; the walls and floors are in exposed concrete. The north wing of the building, never fully occupied, is placed in reserve in 1985.
