The Châtellerault Arms Manufacture was created by royal ordinance of 14 July 1819 on the banks of the Vienne for the manufacture of edged weapons. The site was chosen because of its easily accessible situation in the heart of the Centre-Ouest and a metallurgical tradition in the cutlery industry facilitating the recruitment of skilled labour. Until its closure in 1968, the site never ceased to be modified by the addition or transformation of buildings which were adapted to the evolution of production: edged weapons, firearms from the 1830s, artillery equipment around 1900 and missiles in the 1950s. From 1819 to 1886, an ordered, symmetrical and open plan governed the organisation of buildings in tuffeau and rubble stone rendered. The administration building, initially intended for manufacturing, was erected under the direction of MM. Ledard and Guillebon, while the other workshops were designed by military engineers in charge of the Buildings Service. After 1886, new production methods and the implementation of materials such as cast iron, glass and brick generated large expanses of sheds, warehouse-type halls, buildings housing the motive power (boilers, then steam generators), as well as tall chimneys, very greatly modifying the original plan. From 1914, new modules in concrete and glass make their appearance. Since the cessation of activities, the buildings have housed the Centre for archives of armaments, various services of the municipality and of the Ministry of Education.
