Historique
Forte batterie située dans l'estuaire de la Charente. Cet ouvrage avancé des défenses extérieures de Rochefort, était destiné à protéger la "Fontaine royale de Saint-Nazaire", point d'eau fortifié existant encore, où venaient se ravitailler les navires de guerre stationnés dans l'estuaire. Le premier projet, conçu par l'ingénieur du Roi La Favollière, date de 1666. Vauban le remania personnellement. La construction dura de 1683 à 1686. Vers 1698, à la suite de l'emploi de bombes explosives et incendiaires au siège de Gênes (1684), la toiture et les chemins couverts furent modifiés. History
Powerful battery situated in the estuary of the Charente. This advanced work of the outer defences of Rochefort was intended to protect the "Fontaine royale de Saint-Nazaire", a fortified water point still existing, where warships stationed in the estuary came to take on supplies. The first project, conceived by the King's engineer La Favollière, dates from 1666. Vauban reworked it personally. Construction lasted from 1683 to 1686. Around 1698, following the use of explosive and incendiary bombs at the siege of Genoa (1684), the roof and covered ways were modified. This is a work of Vauban's second system, the sole representative of this type on the Atlantic coast.
