Construit en 1672, le fort fut le premier ouvrage de protection de l'Arsenal de Rochefort. Transformé au 18e siècle par l'adjonction d'une batterie demi-circulaire chargée de défendre l'entrée de l'estuaire. En 1848, un projet est défini pour établir un nouveau parapet en terre afin d'y installer dix pièces d'artillerie et construire un corps de garde défensif pour soixante hommes. D'autres travaux sont réalisés à la fin des années 1880 pour doter le fort de nouvelles pièces d'artillerie avec la réalisation de plate-formes en béton munies de rails de pivotement.

History
Built in 1672, the fort was the first protective work for the Rochefort Arsenal. Modified in the 18th century by the addition of a semi-circular battery charged with defending the entrance to the estuary. In 1848, a project was defined to establish a new earth parapet in order to install ten pieces of artillery and construct a defensive guardhouse for sixty men. Other works were carried out in the late 1880s to equip the fort with new pieces of artillery with the construction of concrete platforms fitted with pivoting rails.
