Historique
Le site de Vergeroux s'offre comme le premier obstacle depuis le large. Situé au bout de la Pointe sans fin, un promontoire de 18 m de haut domine le fleuve et un vaste marais mouillé. Il a donc logiquement été pressenti pour l'établissement d'un havre d'hivernage puis comme site de l'arsenal pour la Marine de Louis XIV. Ce couloir d'invasion de l'arsenal finalement installé à Rochefort, après avoir abrité une batterie et un fort est transformé en magasin à poudre (1679 puis entre 1771 et 1773, construction du grand magasin à poudre, poudrière standard du 17e siècle, pour remplacer celui de Rochefrot). Au 19e s., il devient atelier de fabrication et de stockage des explosifs et enfin après la Seconde guerre mondiale, site de désamorçage d'engins de tous ordres abandonnés sur nos côtes. Fermé en 1993, l'établissement de pyrotechnie du Vergeroux, transformé un temps en champ d'exercice des unités de l'Armée de l'air est actuellement en friche. Ce site a un riche passé, intimement lié à l'histoire de la défense de nos côtes et à l'évolution technologique des poudres et des explosifs et à leur conditionnement. On y trouve une poudrière de type Vauban et une poudrière de type 1878. Entre 1878 et 1882, par le biais d'expropriation pour cause d'utilité publique, un nouveau magasin à poudre est bâti à 300 m du site initial, pouvant contenu 250 tonnes de poudre. Cette poudrière neuve est reliée à la pyrotechnie par un chemin de fer, modèle de magasin renforcé sur deux étages isolés du reste de l'édifice par les sas derrière des vitres épaisses, les ouvertures closes par de lourds volets de chêne, toutes les huisseries pourvues de pentures, gonds et serrures de bronze illustrations de la crainte que suscitait la mélanite. L'élément qui fait l'objet de la protection est isolé et est devenu propriété communale. Ce n'est qu'une pièce de cet ensemble.
