L'origine de la fontaine est liée à la fondation de l'arsenal de Rochefort (2e moitié 17e siècle) ; elle était destinée à l'approvisionnement en eau douce des navires. La première construction, terminée vers 1676, était une tour hexagonale haute de 14 mètres, décorée d'un ordre dorique. Vers 1763, la fontaine est entièrement remaniée par l'ingénieur Augias afin d'augmenter son débit et les prises d'eau. La tour reprend le plan hexagonal d'origine mais elle est décorée de pilastres d'angle à ordre toscan, d'arcades aveugles. Deux oculi encadrés de guirlandes végétales finement sculptées éclairaient l'intérieur de la fontaine. En plus de cette aiguade et du bassin l'accompagnant sur la rive, il existe un système hydraulique formé par une canalisation longue de 2800 mètres, enterrée et dont certains regards de visite sont conservés, et deux sources situées dans le bourg de Saint-Nazaire ("Fontpourry" et "source des Morts") dotées chacune d'un édicule en pierre de taille, voûté et servant de réservoir.

History
The origin of the fountain is linked to the foundation of the Rochefort arsenal (second half of the 17th century); it was intended for the supply of fresh water to ships. The first construction, completed around 1676, was a hexagonal tower 14 metres high, decorated with a Doric order. Around 1763, the fountain was entirely remodelled by engineer Augias in order to increase its flow rate and water intakes. The tower retains the original hexagonal plan but is decorated with corner pilasters with Tuscan order, blind arcades. Two oculi framed with finely sculpted vegetable garlands lit the interior of the fountain. In addition to this water-tower and the basin accompanying it on the bank, there is a hydraulic system formed by piping 2800 metres long, buried with some of its inspection chambers preserved, and two springs located in the village of Saint-Nazaire ("Fontpourry" and "source des Morts") each fitted with an aedicule in ashlar, vaulted and serving as a reservoir.
