C'est après 1880 et ses premiers grands succès littéraires que l'officier de Marine Julien Viaud, alias Pierre Loti, entrepris de grandes transformations dans la maison familiale acquise en 1802 par son arrière grand-mère. Il en fit, à l'exclusion des pièces les plus chargées de souvenirs d'enfance, un décor d'inspiration orientale et extrême-orientale surtout, mais également néo-gothique, pour mettre en scène les objets et souvenirs rapportés de ses voyages ou comme cadre à des fêtes somptueuses. Les réalisations les plus importantes et surprenantes ont été menées après 1895, date à laquelle il acquiert la maison contiguë. Là, il aménage la mosquée à partir des matériaux d'une mosquée de Damas, le salon chinois, la grande salle à manger Renaissance et le salon bleu de style Louis XV - Louis XVI. History
It was after 1880 and his first great literary successes that the Navy officer Julien Viaud, alias Pierre Loti, undertook major transformations in the family home acquired in 1802 by his great-grandmother.
