The church was built from 1836 to 1838 by municipal architect Felix Garde on the site of an old Capuchin chapel of which only the bell tower, built in 1768, was retained. The design adopted for construction is monumental, especially for the avant-corps with Corinthian colonnade surmounted by a triangular pediment, preceding a basilical plan. Neo-classical also is the support system in the interior, with square pillars between great arches decorated with Ionic pilasters supporting an entablature that runs along the nave. The great arches connect the nave with an aisle on either side, flanked by as many chapels as there are bays. The entire interior received painted decoration whose oldest elements are in the choir and include two scenes from the life of Saint Louis. Elsewhere, paint and gold enhance the architectural elements or portray an antique decoration, very fashionable in the second half of the 19th century for public buildings.
