Un logis à l'enseigne "l'Ecu de Bretagne" occupait cet emplacement en 1565. La reconstruction de l'hôtel se place après 1779 et devait être achevée en 1782. Au début du 19e siècle, l'hôtel fut démembré de la partie regardant vers la rue des Etuves. Une plaque rappelle que le peintre Frédéric Bazille est né dans cet immeuble en 1841. La façade sur rue s'élève de deux étages sur rez-de-chaussée et un demi-étage de comble. Fenêtres rectangulaires avec bandeau saillant. Les encadrements moulurés présentent des crossettes aux angles supérieurs et sous l'appui. Les linteaux sont ornés de clefs saillantes plates, en forme de trapèze, excepté à l'étage supérieur. La corniche à larmier supporte le chéneau. Sous la corniche, grands masques sculptés. Un passage voûté en berceau conduit à la cour. Les façades latérales donnant sur cette dernière, s'ouvrent sur les appartements du rez-de-chaussée par trois arcs en plein cintre. La façade au sud-ouest diffère en ce qu'elle comporte une galerie extérieure qui permet la communication avec le palier de l'escalier. Ce balcon est supporté par une série de consoles sculptées que soulignent des chutes de feuillages. Au fond de la cour, un grand arc en anse de panier s'ouvre sur l'escalier. Celui-ci comprend trois volées par étage. La ferronnerie de la rampe se compose d'une alternance de barreaux droits, recourbés en haut et en bas en volutes, et de barreaux ondulés. Le panneau de départ a reçu une ornementation plus complexe. D'une base ondulée partent de longues volutes spiralées qui s'allongent suivant des inflexions végétales et s'assemblent au cadre par de petites olives. History
A dwelling with the sign "the Coat of Arms of Brittany" occupied this site in 1565. The reconstruction of the hotel is dated after 1779 and should have been completed in 1782. This comprises three flights per storey. The ironwork of the handrail consists of an alternation of straight bars, curved at top and bottom into volutes, and undulating bars. The starting panel has received more complex ornamentation. From an undulating base long spiralled volutes depart which extend according to plant-like inflections and join the frame by small olives. In the central part, a small beaded stem coils into a screw-thread.
