En 1740 la ville obtient un privilège royal pour la construction d' une salle de spectacle. L' édification est mise au concours sous l'impulsion du maréchal de Richelieu, gouverneur de Montpellier, en 1752 : candidatures de Jean Antoine Giral, Estève, Dejean, Jacques Philippe Mareschal ; appréciation des projets par Jacques Ange Gabriel. Le projet retenu est celui de Jacques Philippe Mareschal. L'emplacement choisi est hors les murs, sur les fossés comblés de l'enceinte, au sud-est de la ville. La construction du théâtre s'accompagne de remaniements du secteur urbain : adjudication des travaux à Hilaire Ricard en 1754. La salle de spectacle, à l'italienne, comportait dans sa partie postérieure, une salle de concert. L'édifice, très gravement endommagé par un incendie en 1785 est immédiatement reconstruit à l'identique par Jacques Donnat et J.N. Lenoir. Inauguration de la nouvelle salle en 1787. Nouvel incendie en 1881puis concours pour la reconstruction ; projets de Cassien-Bernard, Goutes, Feuchères, Arnaud, Deperthe. Joseph-Marie Cassien-Bernard l'emporte et obtient la direction des travaux ; chantier de 1881 à 1888. Décor peint d'Ernest Michel, Arnaud d'Ubec, Paul Estève, Auguste Privat, Max Leenhardt, Antonin Marie Chatinière ; décor sculpté par Jean Antoine

In 1740 the city obtained a royal privilege for the construction of a theatre. The building was put out to competition on the initiative of the marshal of Richelieu, governor of Montpellier, in 1752: candidacies from Jean Antoine Giral, Estève, Dejean, Jacques Philippe Mareschal; assessment of the projects by Jacques Ange Gabriel.
