Vers 1768, l'érudit Jean-François Séguier décide de construire sa maison dans la rue principale du faubourg des Carmes, habité par les ouvriers du textile et de la soie. La demeure abrite sa bibliothèque ainsi que ses collections, mis à la disposition des visiteurs. L'édifice est typique des constructions nîmoises de la seconde moitié du 18e siècle. Le vestibule ovale s'inspire du palais épiscopal. La cage d'escalier est légèrement décentrée pour privilégier l'axe menant de l'entrée vers le jardin.

History
Around 1768, the scholar Jean-François Séguier decided to build his house in the main street of the Carmes suburb, inhabited by textile and silk workers. The mansion housed his library as well as his collections, made available to visitors. The building is typical of Nîmes constructions of the second half of the 18th century. The oval vestibule is inspired by the episcopal palace. The staircase cage is slightly off-centre to favour the axis leading from the entrance to the garden.
