Au début du 13e siècle, l'église dépendait de l'ordre de Saint-Jean de Jérusalem. Saint-Christol fut d'autre part le siège d'un prieuré, uni au monastère de Prouille. Avant la Révolution, Fonters n'était pas une paroisse mais une simple annexe de celle de Saint-Amans. En 1873, les habitants firent construire une nouvelle église dans le village, le titre de succursale étant transféré dans cette nouvelle église, avec tous les avantages qui en résultaient. La présence de hameaux aux environs et du cimetière maintinrent Saint-Christol en activité. L'église est à nef unique et abside demi-circulaire. Deux parties peuvent être distinguées : à l'est, l'abside et la moitié de la nef, d'un type roman primitif ; à l'ouest, la nef avec une porte en plein cintre murée, ne paraissant pas antérieure au 13e siècle. Le mur du fond et quatre mètres de murs latéraux, avec la porte actuelle, sont des agrandissements du 18e siècle.

History
At the beginning of the 13th century, the church was dependent on the order of Saint-Jean de Jérusalem. Saint-Christol was furthermore the seat of a priory, united to the monastery of Prouille. Before the Revolution, Fonters was not a parish but a simple annex of that of Saint-Amans. In 1873, the inhabitants had a new church built in the village, the title of subsidiary being transferred to this new church, with all the advantages that resulted from it. The church has a single nave and a semi-circular apse. Two parts can be distinguished: to the east, the apse and half the nave, of a primitive Romanesque type; to the west, the nave with a round arch doorway blocked up, appearing to be no earlier than the 13th century. The rear wall and four metres of the side walls, with the present doorway, are enlargements from the 18th century.
