La ville fut entourée de murs et de fossés par Pons Amelii, abbé du monastère d'Alet de 1167 à 1197. La dénomination de porte Calvières apparaît dans la seconde moitié du 16e siècle. Le compoix de 1551 indique qu'un sieur Calvière a vendu des biens au chapitre. Il est probable que la porte, d'abord dite "Portail d'Amont", a pris le nom du propriétaire d'un immeuble voisin ou riverain de la rue. La porte s'ouvre, à l'extérieur comme à l'intérieur, sous des arcs en plein cintre. Les extrados des arcs de tête sont concentriques aux intrados. History
The town was surrounded by walls and ditches by Pons Amelii, abbot of the monastery of Alet from 1167 to 1197. The name Calvières gate appears in the second half of the 16th century. The 1551 compoix indicates that a certain Calvière sold property to the chapter. It is probable that the gate, initially called "Portail d'Amont", took its name from the owner of a building neighbouring or adjoining the street. The gate opens, both externally and internally, under round arches. The extrados of the arch heads are concentric with the intrados. To the north-east of the gate, the enclosure walls exist for around a hundred metres. Their construction is based on rubble stone of varying dimensions and nature. Near this part, the section is in medium ashlar. Then, a part built more hastily is crowned by a watchtower.
