La ville fut entourée de murs et de fossés par Pons Amelii, abbé du monastère d'Alet de 1167 à 1197. La porte de Cadène se compose d'un massif rectangulaire relié aux remparts, dans lequel est percée la porte proprement dite. La voûte qui couvre le passage est en plein cintre et assez élevée. Un arc a été rajouté au niveau des piédroits contre lesquels venaient battre les vantaux de la porte afin de réduire sa hauteur. Un mâchicoulis existe après les piédroits, prenant toute la largeur du passage. La construction est dérasée au-dessus de la voûte.

History
The town was surrounded with walls and ditches by Pons Amelii, abbot of the monastery of Alet from 1167 to 1197. The gate of Cadène consists of a rectangular mass connected to the ramparts, in which is pierced the gate proper. The vault which covers the passage is round-arch and quite elevated. An arch was added at the level of the jambs against which the leaves of the gate would strike in order to reduce its height. A machicolation exists after the jambs, taking up the full width of the passage. The construction is cut off above the vault.
