Historique

History
The castle of Rochechouart owes its origin to the fortification, around the year 1000, of a rocky spur dominating the Graine. The castellany was, until 1470, the fief of a cadet branch of the viscounts of Limoges. Of the ancient fortress only the entrance barbican with drawbridge survives, which retains one of the flanking towers from the 13th century. Important works took place in the late 15th and early 16th century, as a result of the damage from the Hundred Years' War and in consequence of the transmission of the viscounty to Jean de Pontville. The castle was enlarged according to a pentagonal plan, of which the north-west tower, demolished, was to be the keep. Although subsequently modified, the dwelling blocks still bear witness to these embellishments for residential purposes: large bays of windows crowned with continuous dormers, court gallery on columns with shafts moulded in twisted reeding (as at the castle of Oiron for example), interior decoration of remarkably preserved mural paintings. In 1793, the revolutionaries only succeeded in decapitating the two towers flanking the south-east facade. Following the acquisition of the castle by the department and the town in 1836, in order to house the sub-prefecture and the town hall there, various campaigns of restoration were undertaken, under the Historic Monuments scheme, from 1858-1859. The establishment of the departmental contemporary art museum, opened in June 1985, was the occasion for a major campaign of interior restoration.
