The low-pressure electrical power plant of the former Carmaux coal mine was built by the Société des Mines de Carmaux, from 1913 to 1919, essentially with female labour. Three power plants succeeded each other on the site, the first dating from 1902 (destroyed), the second from 1913-1919, and a third - a high-pressure power plant -, built in 1952 and encompassing the buildings of the second. The engine room, the large hall with metal roof structure, emptied of its installations, were decommissioned by the coal mines in 1988. The power plant supplied four mine shafts, the washery, the coking plant and the ammonia synthesis plant, as well as the mining towns. A model illustrating its operation is preserved in Cagnac-les-Mines.
