History

The seigniory of Montalègre has been known since 1268. In the 15th century, it belonged to the house of Rodez, and subsequently passed into the hands of different representatives of the Rouergue and Limousin nobility. Of feudal plan, the castle consists of an almost square main dwelling, flanked by four round towers. The south façade comprises a projection expressing the presence of the central spiral staircase. At each storey, a door gives access to a small room in each of the towers. The second storey retains three Gothic fireplaces and a moulded door. The third and last storey, formerly devoted to defence (the machicolations have disappeared), was converted into a loft. In the north-east tower is preserved a room vaulted with a cul-de-four bearing traces of painting with religious motifs, appearing to be an old chapel. These traces correspond with the presence, on the first storey, of a chapel with 19th-century decoration.
