Historique
Les premières traces du château remontent au 10e siècle. Au 12e siècle, les seigneurs font des dons pour la construction de l'abbaye de Silvanès. Construit sur un promontoire, sur une nécropole mérovingienne, ce château défendait la ville contre les attaques venant du midi. Le grand donjon est protégé par un mur d'enceinte renfermant une basse-cour et des communs, et par un fossé taillé dans le roc. Au 15e siècle, l'édifice est embelli et agrandi (construction de voûtes, portes en accolade, cheminées gothiques, mâchicoulis et échauguettes...). Au 17e siècle, le système de défense est démantelé et le château recouvert d'un toit en lauzes. Montaigut était également un lieu où la justice était rendue ; le château a conservé sa prison intacte.

History
The first traces of the castle date back to the 10th century. In the 12th century, the lords made donations for the construction of the abbey of Silvanès. Built on a promontory, on a Merovingian necropolis, this castle defended the town against attacks coming from the south. The great keep is protected by an enclosure wall containing a outer ward and outbuildings, and by a ditch cut into the rock. In the 15th century, the building is embellished and enlarged (construction of vaults, doors with accolade moulding, Gothic fireplaces, machicolations and corner turrets...). In the 17th century, the defensive system is dismantled and the castle covered with a slate roof. Montaigut was also a place where justice was administered; the castle has preserved its prison intact.
