History

Representative of the fortified houses of the 15th century in this region, this castle modest in its size and external architecture, retains from its arrangements of the classical period a set of overdoors of altogether charming craftsmanship. It controlled the Pertuis pass which commands the passage between the Puy region and that of Yssingeaux. In the 15th century, the castle was probably surrounded by moats fed by several underground aqueducts. In the 16th-17th century, it was enlarged by the addition to the north of a Renaissance main dwelling; the windows were enlarged and the stone spiral staircase replaced by a wooden staircase. Various arrangements of the castle took place during the first half of the 18th century: construction of the east wing, interior decoration (painted decoration executed by the painter Storni). The main body of dwelling, of rectangular form, is flanked by corner bartizans. An isolated tower ensured flanking at the north-west corner, then served as a dovecote.
