Historique

History
The former bishop's palace, burned in 1782, occupied the present cloister and its gardens, against the cathedral. It had been enlarged and embellished during the 17th century by Monseigneur de Béthune. The bishop's palace was rebuilt in 1825 by Monseigneur de Bonald, bishop of Le Puy. The present edifice completely modified the primitive plan by projecting into the void, by an overhang of fourteen metres, the large main building in terrace which clears the south lateral face of the cathedral. The bishop's palace was constructed parallel to the latter. The cloister is surrounded, on its East face, by an entrance porch with colonnade from the 17th century, the sole vestige having survived the fire of 1782. The west face presents a building body of one storey. The overhang of the façade presents two storeys of basement with windows treated as round-arched openings with rustication. The edifice also comprises a double-revolution staircase and stoops. Inside, the first floor is reserved for reception apartments with an enfilade of rooms which occupies the entire façade.
