Le projet d'élever un monument à la gloire de Vercingétorix sur le plateau de Gergovie et à Clermont-Ferrand remonte au Second Empire. Vers 1868, Bartholdi propose un projet qui est écarté. Le plâtre définitif est accepté en 1899. Le monument a été installé en 1903. Le bronze, dans la tradition du Bernin, montre Vercingétorix sur un cheval lancé au galop, sautant par-dessus le cadavre d'un soldat romain. Voulant avant tout évoquer un mouvement intense et violent, Bartholdi représente le cheval dans un mouvement intermédiaire, entre saut et galop. History
The project to erect a monument to the glory of Vercingetorix on the Gergovie plateau and in Clermont-Ferrand dates back to the Second Empire. Around 1868, Bartholdi proposes a project which is set aside. The definitive plaster is accepted in 1899. The monument was installed in 1903. The bronze, in the tradition of Bernini, shows Vercingetorix on a horse launched at a gallop, leaping over the body of a Roman soldier. Wishing above all to evoke an intense and violent movement, Bartholdi represents the horse in an intermediate movement, between leap and gallop. For the costume and equipment of Vercingetorix, he drew inspiration from objects preserved in the Museum of National Antiquities at Saint-Germain-en-Laye, drawing elements from different periods (iron age for the sword, Gallo-Roman period for the horse's equipment). He adds elements with no historical foundation (winged helmet). It was for the artist a matter of evoking the idea of the hero as it existed in the collective consciousness of his time.
