Dès 1850, il fut question de remplacer la vieille salle située au sud de la place de la Victoire par un théâtre plus vaste et plus digne de sa fonction. La décision est prise d'aménager le bâtiment de l'ancienne halle aux toiles, construit entre 1815 et 1820. Le projet est confié à l'architecte Jean-Joseph Teillard. Gourgouillon est chargé des sculptures et Jules Toulot des scènes peintes. L'inauguration eut lieu en 1894, mais la décoration du foyer ne fut réalisée qu'en 1901. £Teillard adpota le parti du théâtre à l'italienne : façade avec porche et loggia ouvrant sur un vaste vestibule surmonté du foyer ; salle à balcons en fer à cheval répartis en classes ; scène à l'italienne avec coulisses, dessous et cintres. Du vestibule partent plusieurs escaliers, chacun desservant un niveau différent.

History
From 1850 onwards, there was talk of replacing the old hall situated south of the Place de la Victoire with a more spacious and more worthy theatre. The decision was taken to adapt the building of the former linen hall, constructed between 1815 and 1820. The project was entrusted to architect Jean-Joseph Teillard. Gourgouillon was responsible for the sculptures and Jules Toulot for the painted scenes. The inauguration took place in 1894, but the decoration of the foyer was only completed in 1901. Teillard adopted the Italian theatre design: façade with porch and loggia opening onto a vast vestibule surmounted by the foyer; auditorium with balconies in horseshoe arrangement distributed by class; Italian stage with wings, understage and flies. Several staircases depart from the vestibule, each serving a different level.
