Historique

History
In 927, the count Acfred ceded the curtis indominicata which he possessed at Sauxillanges to establish monks there. The monastery is attached to Cluny before the middle of the 10th century. A first enclosure developed around this monastic nucleus, later enveloped by a second larger enclosure, subsequently itself surrounded by a third. Of this last enclosure, which does not appear to date beyond the end of the Middle Ages, remain some vestiges among which the best preserved is a circular tower without a crown. The latter is the only one of the three or four rampart towers which subsist to have preserved approximately its primitive height as well as its embrasures and gun ports. The north façade of the former dwelling possessing this tower projecting, marks the line of the fortifications.
