En 927, le comte d'Auvergne fonda une communauté bénédictine de douze moines à Sauxillanges et leur céda cette terre avec toutes ses dépendances, en particulier deux églises, dont une dédiée à Saint-Pierre. Vers la fin de l'époque gothique fut élevée une troisième église au nord-est de l'église Saint-Pierre qui devint probablement l'église prieurale jusqu'à la Révolution et fut vendue comme bien national en 1792 sous la dénomination de "chapelle Notre-Dame du Bois". De l'ancienne église Saint-Pierre subsistent les façades latérales Est et ouest, ainsi que la façade nord à pignon.

History
In 927, the count of Auvergne founded a Benedictine community of twelve monks at Sauxillanges and ceded to them this land with all its dependencies, in particular two churches, one of which was dedicated to Saint-Peter. Towards the end of the Gothic period a third church was raised to the north-east of the Saint-Peter church which probably became the priory church until the Revolution and was sold as national property in 1792 under the name of "chapel Notre-Dame du Bois". Of the old Saint-Peter church remain the east and west lateral façades, as well as the north façade with gable.
