History
The tower on the north side comprises, at ground level, a vaulted passage and, on each of the two superimposed storeys, a vaulted room with pointed arches, composed of wall ribs and ridge ribs resting on sculpted corbels. Two twin windows light the two opposite north and south faces. The plan of the tower begins as a square on the ground and transforms into a circle from the first storey onwards, but only on the north side, which is the one facing attacks. Five projecting consoles are the vestiges of the machicolations which served to defend the entrance. The crenellation which was to crown the tower, dismantled in its upper part, has completely disappeared. A stone staircase, spiral, established in the thickness of the wall and forming a projection in the shape of a turret on the inner side. The south tower of the city, of the same surface area in plan as the first, is less tall. The second storey, which must have existed as indicated by the traces of the spiral staircase above the platform, disappeared in the dismantling of the upper part. The tower is square and the room of the first storey does not assume, as those of the north tower do, a fan shape. The crenellated curtain walls which connected the towers have almost completely disappeared.
