Kuvaus
Kuopion rännikatuverkko on 1770-luvulta alkaen läänin pääkaupungin asemakaavaan sisällytetty paloturvallisuutta lisäävä palokujaverkosto.
Rännikatujen nykyinen kaupunkikuva on ajallisesti kerrostunut. Purkaminen ja katulinjaan rakentamisesta luopuminen on paikoin heikentänyt katujen matalaa ja tiivistä luonnetta. Tuomiokirkko muodostaa osalle rännikatuja merkittävän kaupunkikuvallisen päätteen.
Rännikatuja on kunnostettu 1980-luvulta lähtien lähinnä kevyen liikenteen tarkoituksiin. Rännikatujen kehittämissuunnitelma käsittää 46 suurkorttelia, jotka kattavat lähes koko ruutukaava-alueen katuverkon.
Historia
Kuopion rännikatuverkko perustuu asemakaavaan, jonka maanmittari Pehr Kjellmanin laati 1775 perustetulle kaupungille.

Description
The rännikatu network of Kuopio has been part of the town plan of the provincial capital since the 1770s, comprising a system of palokuja that improves fire safety. No other town has preserved a hierarchy of two differently wide streets of this comprehensiveness.
The original alignment and width of the comprehensive rännikatu network in the Kuopio grid plan area, approximately 7.2 metres, has largely been preserved. The area of the rännikatu network, which came into being in three planning phases in 1775, 1869 and 1903, has been delimited to the area planned in the 1770s and 1860s on the basis of the survival of the building stock.
The present townscape of the rännikatu is layered in time. Demolition and the abandonment of building on the street line have in places weakened the low and dense character of the streets. The cathedral (Tuomiokirkko) forms a significant townscape terminus for some of the rännikatu.
The rännikatu have been restored since the 1980s, mainly for light traffic purposes. The development plan for the rännikatu covers 46 suurkorttelia, which encompass almost the entire street network of the grid plan area.
History
The rännikatu network of Kuopio is based on the town plan drawn up by land surveyor Pehr Kjellman for the town founded in 1775. Construction of the town began on the basis of this plan; the first area to be laid out with a town plan was the area around the Tuomiokirkko cathedral.
The structural idea of the town was based on large blocks, which the so-called rännikadut, i.e. palokujat (fire alleys), divided into four smaller blocks. The actual construction of the streets began in the blocks surrounding the Tuomiokirkko cathedral in the 1770s and 1790s. The rännikadut of the Kauppatori market square area and Maljalahdenkatu were completed in the 1810s. Later grid plans, by M. Mohell in 1869 and K.J. Karlsson in 1903, extended the area of the large blocks and fire alleys westward and northward.
The aim of Kjellman's town plan was to create a fire-safe urban structure and, on the other hand, to emphasise Kuopio's position as the capital of the province. To achieve fire safety, the streets were wide, 24 kyynärää, and the plots large. The fire alleys dividing the blocks were made 12 kyynärää (a little over seven metres) wide, so that over time they became streets.
