The Finnish Heritage Agency's description

Kuuluisa Kuopion tori eli kauppatori on säilyttänyt keskeisen asemansa kaupunkirakenteessa, vaikka uudisrakentaminen sen varsilla on muuttanut torin ilmettä. Julkinen rakennuskanta edustaa hyvin torin keskeistä asemaa kaupungin talous-, liikenne- ja hallintokeskustana 1800- ja 1900-luvulla.

Toriin liittyvät kaupungintalo (1885), linja-autoasema (1934), lyseo (1826-1940), kauppahalli (1902) ja tunnettu Kuopion symboli, Veljmies-patsas (1959).

Kaupungin vanhin tori sijaitsi maanmittari Pehr Kjellmanin asemakaavassa 1775 nykyisen Snellmanin puiston paikalla. Kauppatori piirrettiin ensi kertaa nykyiselle paikalleen Anders Röstedtin karttaan 1818. Kaupankäynti siirtyi torille 1856. Kimnaasi-, Heinä- tai Hevostorina tunnettu tori sai nykyisen nimensä 1918.

Torin pohjoislaidalla olevan komean kaupungintalon suunnitteli 1882-1885 F.A. Torin etelälaidalle valmistui Kuopion lyseon vanhin osa triviaalikoulu 1826 (C.L. Engel). Rakennusta laajennettiin 1875, 1888, 1914 ja 1940.

Jugendia edustava kauppahalli rakennettiin 1902 (J.V. Strömberg), rakennukseen liittyvä kalahalli valmistui 1914 (A. Sirelius). Torilla kauppahallin tuntumassa ovat Heikki Konttisen tekemä Veljmies-patsas 1959 ja Taru Mäntysen Siskotyttö 1984. Torin alle valmistui pysäköintihalli 1991.

The famous Kuopio tori, or kauppatori, has retained its central position in the urban structure, although new building along its sides has changed the appearance of the square. The public building stock represents well the square's central role as the city's economic, transport and administrative centre in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Buildings associated with the square include the town hall (1885), the bus station (1934), the lyseo (1826-1940), the market hall (1902) and the well-known symbol of Kuopio, the Veljmies statue (1959).

The city's oldest square was located on the site of today's Snellmanin puisto, in the town plan of land surveyor Pehr Kjellman of 1775. The market square was first drawn in its present location on Anders Röstedt's map of 1818. Trade moved to the square in 1856. The square, known as Kimnaasi-, Heinä- or Hevostori, received its present name in 1918.

The handsome town hall on the north side of the square was designed by F.A. Sjöström in 1882-1885. Construction was a direct result of the 1873 reform of municipal administration, which enlarged the councils and civil service of the towns. Kuopio's first bus station was completed next to the town hall in 1934, to drawings by Juho Nykänen. The classicist single-storey building represents wooden construction, which has become rare in the surroundings of the square. On the south side of the square, the oldest part of the Kuopio lyseo, a triviaalikoulu, was completed in 1826 (C.L. Engel). The building was extended in 1875, 1888, 1914 and 1940.

The Art Nouveau market hall was built in 1902 (J.V. Strömberg); the fish hall attached to the building was completed in 1914 (A. Sirelius). On the square near the market hall stand Heikki Konttinen's Veljmies statue of 1959 and Taru Mäntynen's Siskotyttö of 1984. A parking garage was completed under the square in 1991.
