Vaasan merenkulku edellytti 1800-luvun lopulla ulkosatamaa syvässä kulkeville aluksille. Satama päätettiin sijoittaa Palosaaresta Vaskiluotoon 1886. Samalla päätettiin anoa rautatien jatkamista satamaan 1883 Vaasaan valmistuneelta Pohjanmaan radalta.

The single-storey neo-Renaissance-style station building on the Vaskiluoto harbour line is exceptional, since the office and goods storehouse are under the same roof. The stationmaster's house is also of a rare type, as is its outbuilding.

What adds to the uniqueness is the former customs chief's residence of the Vaskiluoto harbour, on the western edge of the station area, which is now considered part of the station area.

At the end of the 19th century, Vaasa's shipping required an outer harbour for vessels with deep draught. It was decided in 1886 to place the harbour at Vaskiluoto instead of Palosaari. At the same time it was decided to apply for the extension of the railway to the harbour from the Ostrobothnia railway, which had been completed to Vaasa in 1883.

The Vaskiluoto harbour was completed in 1892 and the harbour line was laid in 1900. The state financed two-thirds and the town one-third of the construction of the harbour railway, almost 20 km long. The station building and the stationmaster's house with its outbuildings were completed by the early 1910s.
