The Finnish Heritage Agency's description

Muita vastaavia samoilla piirustuksilla rakennettuja asemia olivat mm. Kauhajoki, Närpiö ja Teuva. Ilmajoen asemarakennus valmistui 1910 ja tavaramakasiini 1911. Asemapuiston koilliskulmaan rakennettiin samaan aikaan asuinrakennus talousrakennuksineen. Asemaa ja asuinpihaa yhdistämään istutettiin koivukuja.

Henkilöliikenne rataosuudella päättyi 1960-luvulla. Tavaraliikenne Kaskisiin on jatkunut vähäisessä määrin. Ilmajoen aseman asuinpihan rakennukset purettiin 1987. Käytöstä poistunut asemarakennus myytiin yksityiskäyttöön 2006.

Ilmajoki is one of the small stations on the Suupohja line running from Seinäjoki to Kristinestad and Kaskinen. Its representative building stock, typical of its kind, includes, in addition to the station building, a goods storehouse and a park. The Ilmajoki station area is located in the southern part of the Ilmajoki urban centre.

The single-storey station building, representing late Jugend, was built to type drawings signed by architect Thure Hellström.

Construction of the Suupohja line from Seinäjoki to Kristinestad and Kaskinen began in 1909, and the line was opened in 1913. The line had 10 intermediate stations and 5 halts.

The railway project had been under discussion as early as the 1880s, after the completion of the Tampere-Vaasa line, but because of a lack of funds, other railway projects and defence-policy considerations, it was postponed until the early part of the 20th century. Running through fertile and densely populated districts, the line connected the coastal export towns of Kristinestad and Kaskinen with the junction station at Seinäjoki. The line particularly eased the transport of grain and timber from South Ostrobothnia to the coastal towns.

Ilmajoki was one of six Class V stations on the line. Other similar stations built to the same drawings included Kauhajoki, Närpiö and Teuva, among others. The Ilmajoki station building was completed in 1910 and the goods storehouse in 1911. A residential building with outbuildings was built in the north-eastern corner of the station park at the same time. A birch avenue was planted to link the station and the residential yard.

Passenger traffic on the line ended in the 1960s. Goods traffic to Kaskinen has continued to a small extent. The residential yard buildings of Ilmajoki station were demolished in 1987. The station building, taken out of use, was sold for private use in 2006.
