Kuvaus
Kyrönjoen keskijuoksulla oleva Ilmajoen kirkko muodostaa entisen laajan emäpitäjän kirkko- ja asutushistoriallisen keskustan.
Kyrönjoen rantamaisemassa sijaitsevan 1760-luvun puukirkon ja tapulin lisäksi kirkkomiljööseen liittyy kirkkotarha siunauskappeleineen. Ilmajoen kirkko sijaitsee nykyisen Ilmajoen keskustaajaman eteläosassa, jokea seuraavan maantien varrella.
Ilmajoen pohjakaavaltaan ulkoviisteisen ristikirkon aumatun paanukaton keskellä on kahdeksankulmainen lanterniini. Kirkon sisätiloja on uusittu useasti. Alttaria vastapäätä oleva saarnastuoli on vuodelta 1765. Jaakko Juhonpoika Könnin tekemä pendyylikello lehterin rintamuksessa on vuodelta 1819. Sisätilojen nykyasu, johon kuuluvat koristetaiteilija Urho Lehtisen maalaukset, on 1930-luvulta.
Kirkon vieressä on pohjalaistyyppinen renessanssitapuli, jonka kirkonkelloista kaksi on tukholmalaisen Jörgen Putenssonin valamaa 1650-luvulla.
Kirkkomaalla on Könni-suvun hautakappeli ja arkkitehti Kauno S. Kallion piirtämä ja 1939 rakennettu siunauskappeli.
Kirkon koillispuolella on nykyiselle paikalle seurakuntataloksi 1910-luvulla siirretty rakennus.
Historia
Isokyrön kappelina ollut Ilmajoki erotettiin omaksi kirkkoherrakunnaksi 1532. Ilmajokeen kuuluneet Alavuden, Jalasjärven, Kauhajoen, Kurikan, Peräseinäjoen ja Seinäjoen kappelit itsenäistyivät 1800-luvulla.
Ilmajoen seurakunnan järjestyksessään kolmas kirkko valmistui rakennusmestari Matti Hongan johdolla 1766. Samassa yhteydessä rakennettiin myös tapuli.
Kirkon sisätiloissa 1900-luvulla tehdyistä muutoksista viimeisin tehtiin 1998-1999. Sisätilat ovat pääosiltaan arkkitehti Kauno S. Kallion suunnitteleman ja 1934 toteutetun uudistuksen mukaisessa asussa, johon kuuluvat koristetaiteilija Urho Lehtisen maalaukset.
Seurakuntatalo rakennettiin alun perin Ala-Kiikalan pappilaksi 1830-luvulla. Nykyiselle paikalle rakennus siirrettiin 1914 ja muutettiin seurakuntataloksi ja sittemmin nuorisotilaksi.

Description
Ilmajoki church, situated in the central part of the Kyrönjoki river, forms the church and settlement-historical centre of the former large mother parish.
In addition to the 1760s wooden church and bell tower on the riverside landscape of Kyrönjoki, the church environment includes a churchyard with mortuary chapels. Ilmajoki church is located in the southern part of the present-day Ilmajoki central settlement, along the road that follows the river.
The church has a cross-plan with external transepts and an octagonal lantern in the middle of its hipped shingle roof. The interior of the church has been renovated many times. The altar has survived in the corner between the east and south transepts. The high-quality sculptures of the evangelists and angels on the altar rail, dating from 1766, are the work of the Tukholma-based sculptor J. Klerck. The pulpit opposite the altar dates from 1765. The pendulum clock on the gallery front, made by Jaakko Juhonpoika Könni, dates from 1819. The present interior, which includes the paintings by decorative artist Urho Lehtinen, dates from the 1930s.
Next to the church stands an Ostrobothnian-type Renaissance bell tower, two of whose church bells were cast in the 1650s by the Tukholma-based Jörgen Putensson.
The churchyard contains the burial chapel of the Könni family and a mortuary chapel designed by architect Kauno S. Kallio and built in 1939.
On the north-eastern side of the church is a building that was moved to its present site as a parish hall in the 1910s.
History
Ilmajoki, which had been a chapel of Isokyrö, was separated as its own parish in 1532. The chapels belonging to Ilmajoki, namely those of Alavus, Jalasjärvi, Kauhajoki, Kurikka, Peräseinäjoki and Seinäjoki, became independent in the 19th century.
The third church of the Ilmajoki parish was completed in 1766 under the direction of master builder Matti Honka. A bell tower was also built in connection with it.
Of the alterations made to the interior of the church in the 20th century, the most recent was carried out in 1998-1999. The interior is for the most part in the form of the renovation designed by architect Kauno S. Kallio and carried out in 1934, which includes the paintings of decorative artist Urho Lehtinen.
The parish hall was originally built as the Ala-Kiikala parsonage in the 1830s. The building was moved to its present site in 1914, converted into a parish hall, and later into a youth centre.
