The Finnish Heritage Agency's description

Kajaanin Kaupungin keskustassa, puistoksi istutetulla harjanteella sijaitseva Kajaanin kaupunkiseurakunnan kirkko on yksi edustavimmista 1800-luvun lopun konstruktiivisen puuarkkitehtuurin muistomerkeistä. Kaajanin ortodoksisen seurakunnan pääkirkko viereisessä korttelissa on sodan jälkeisen jälleenrakennuskauden viimeisiä kirkkorakennuksia. Kirkot muodostavat arvokkaan kokonaisuuden "kirkonmäellä".

Kajaanin kirkko on muodoltaan kolmilaivainen tornillinen pitkäkirkko, jossa torni on keskiakselin sivussa.

Ortodoksisen seurakunnan Kristuksen kirkastumisen muistolle pyhitetty pääkirkko on bysanttilaista keskusbasilikatyyppiä oleva tiilikirkko 1950-luvun lopulta. Kirkon sivussa on korkeahuippuinen kellotorni. Kirkon interiööri on 2000-luvun al secco -seinämaalausten ansiosta taiteellisesti merkittävä kokonaisuus.

Grels Nordlingin johdolla 1731 rakennettu Kajaanin ristikirkko purettiin 1895. Jo 1870-luvulta lähtien ajankohtaisena ollut uuden kirkon rakentaminen toteutui monien vaiheiden kautta vasta 1890-luvun lopulla. Arkkitehti Jac. Ahrenbergin tekemien piirustusten mukainen kirkko valmistui 1896.

Suomessa toisen maailmansodan aikana evakkoon joutuneet ortodoksiset seurakunnat lakkautettiin 1949 ja uusi seurakuntajako astui voimaan 1950. Ortodoksisen kirkon jälleenrakentamisesta 1949 säädetyn lain perusteella valtio sitoutui huolehtimaan uusia seurakuntakuntia varten tarvittavien kirkkojen rakentamisesta ja työtä johti ortodoksisen kirkon jälleenrakennustoimikunta 1946-1960. Kirkot suunniteltiin ja rakennettiin rakennushallituksen valvonnassa ja niiden suunnittelijoina olivat mm. arkkitehdit Toivo Paatela ja Ilmari Ahonen.

Kajaanin ortodoksinen kirkko oli yksi jälleenrakennuskautta varten säädetyssä asetuksessa rakennettavaksi mainituista 14 uudesta kirkosta. 1959 valmistuneen Kajaanin ortodoksikirkon piirustukset teki Ilmari Ahonen. Kirkkosali koristettiin seinämaalauksilla 1980-2000-luvulla. Ikonostaasin maalaukset teki ikonitaiteilija Petros Sasaki ja kirkkosalin puoleiset maalaukset taiteilijaprofessori Alkiviadis Kepolas Kreikasta.

Located in the centre of Kajaani, on a ridge planted as a park, the Kajaani town parish church is one of the most representative monuments of late 19th-century constructive timber architecture. The main church of the Kaajani Orthodox parish, in the adjacent block, is one of the last church buildings of the post-war reconstruction period. Together the churches form a valuable ensemble on the "kirkonmäki" (church hill).

The Kajaani church is a three-aisled long church with a tower, in which the tower is set off the central axis. The chancel, narrower than the nave, and the adjoining sacristy are polygonal. Galleries divide the church interior, which is covered by an exposed roof truss structure with decorative forms and woodcut ornament, drawing mainly on English Gothic as its starting point.

The main church of the Orthodox parish, dedicated to the memory of the Transfiguration of Christ, is a brick church of the Byzantine central-plan basilica type from the late 1950s. Beside the church stands a tall-spired bell tower. Thanks to its early-2000s al secco wall paintings, the church interior is an artistically significant whole.

Kajaani was separated from Paltamo parish as a parish of its own in 1651, when it received town rights. However, being impoverished, it was reunited with Paltamo in 1768, and it became independent from Paltamo in 1925.

The cross church of Kajaani, built in 1731 under Grels Nordling, was demolished in 1895. The construction of a new church, a topic already from the 1870s onward, was realised only at the end of the 1890s after many stages. The church, built according to drawings by architect Jac. Ahrenberg, was completed in 1896.

In Finland, the Orthodox parishes that had been evacuated during the Second World War were abolished in 1949, and a new division of parishes came into force in 1950. Under the law on the reconstruction of the Orthodox Church enacted in 1949, the state undertook to provide for the construction of the churches needed for the new parish communities, and the work was led by the Orthodox Church Reconstruction Committee in 1946-1960. The churches were designed and built under the supervision of the National Board of Public Buildings, and their designers included architects Toivo Paatela and Ilmari Ahonen.

The Kajaani Orthodox church was one of the 14 new churches named for construction in the decree issued for the reconstruction period. The drawings for the Kajaani Orthodox church, completed in 1959, were made by Ilmari Ahonen. The nave was decorated with wall paintings in the 1980s-2000s. The paintings on the iconostasis were made by icon painter Petros Sasaki, and the paintings facing the nave by artist professor Alkiviadis Kepolas from Greece.
