Tampereen kaupunki alkoi 1914 jakaa perheellisille kaupunkilaisille tontteja Tammelan pohjoispuolisesta metsästä.

The Lapin pientaloalue is a cohesive early 20th-century working-class residential area, based on a design competition held in 1915.

The Lapin pientaloalue arose beside the Lapinniemi factory area between 1915 and 1934. The building stock of the area shows the basic character and Jugend features of the proposals awarded in the design competition held in 1915. The residential buildings form uniform rows along the streets, and the outbuildings are grouped within the interior of the plots. The single-storey, gable-roofed timber buildings are mainly detached houses for one family. The uniform building style makes the area a coherent whole.

From 1914 the city of Tampere began allocating plots to families of townspeople from the forest north of Tammela. The Lapin pientaloalue arose for low-income working people when the city of Tampere organised a drawing competition in 1915 for working-class residential houses to be built at Lapinniemi and Viinikka. The competition, which covered the design of a dwelling the size of two rooms and a kitchen, was won by architect Max Frelander, and A.E. Eränen won in series B, which comprised dwellings of one room and a kitchen. The first houses were completed in 1915, and building activity in the area continued until 1934, by which time 113 houses had been completed.
