The Oconee Street School is a school building at 594 Oconee St. in Athens, Clarke County, Georgia, built in 1909 in the Classical Revival style. The Athens school system had accepted architect William E. Spink's plans for it in 1908.
Why it's listed
It was listed under criteria A and C, with local-level significance in architecture and education. Its period of significance runs from 1909 to 1968, reflecting the school's 1909 construction.
Physical character
Its walls are brick veneer over concrete block, resting on a foundation of limestone and brick, under a flat roof with a classical wood-and-metal cornice. The rear of the building gained a first floor in 1913 and a second floor with two more classrooms in 1922, and a two-story wing with two classrooms was added at the southeast corner in 1933.
Historical context
The school added a night school and kindergarten in 1913, and after Athens City Schools merged into the Clarke County School System in 1955, it closed in 1975. ACTION Inc. bought the building in 1989 and used it for office space, and the Athens-Clarke Heritage Foundation received a grant from the National Trust in 2007.
