Fort Christanna

Three miles south is the site of colonial Fort Christanna. The fort was built in 1714 by Governor Alexander Spotswood as a protection for tributary Indian tribes from the Iroquois as well as for white settlers. An Indian school was also established there. Fort Christanna was garrisoned until the country hereabouts became well settled.
