Fort Christanna

Nine miles south is the site of Fort Christanna, built in 1714 by Governor Alexander Spotswood as a protection to settlers and tributary Indians. Under its shelter several tribes dwelt and an Indian school was established there. When settlements spread beyond it to the west, the fort was abandoned.
