Over this road Grant's forces came from the east to attack Lee's right wing. Hancock moved by it to his defeat at Burgess Mill, October 27, 1864. Over it Sheridan came to Dinwiddie Courthouse, March 29, 1865, in the operations preceding the battle of Five Forks.
