Huguenot Settlement
In this vicinity Huguenots, refugees from the tyranny of Louis XIV, settled in 1700 under the leadership of the Marquis de la Muce. The region had been deserted by its former occupants, the Monacan Indians, and the Huguenot settlement centered at the site of their village, called "Manakin Town". Later parties of Huguenots settled on both sides of James River and elsewhere.
