Midlothian Coal Mines
A mile south are the Midlothian Coal Mines, probably the oldest coal mines in America. Coal was first mined here before 1730 and a railway was built from the mines to James River before 1830. Operations went on continuously until 1865, and the coal used in cannon casting at the Tredegar Iron Works, Richmond, was obtained here.
