Siege of Suffolk
The town, occupied by Union troops on May 12, 1862, was strongly fortified. The Confederate General Longstreet, detached from Lee's army, besieged it on April 11, 1863. Recalled by Lee, Longstreet withdrew from Suffolk on May 3, 1863, too late to take part in the battle of Chancellorsville.
