Early History of Suffolk
A warehouse was established here in 1730 on land of the Widow Constance. The town was established in 1742. Robert Howe occupied it with Virginia and North Carolina troops in February, 1776. It was burned by a British raiding force under General Matthews, May 13, 1779. Lafayette visited it in February, 1825. Suffolk was destroyed by fire in 1837 but soon rose from its ashes.
