Dismal Swamp
The swamp, just to the south, was visited by William Byrd in 1728 while surveying the Virginia-North Carolina line. In 1763, George Washington made explorations in it, and organized the Dismal Swamp Company to drain it. The company acquired 40,000 acres of land in the swamp.
