Hampden-Sydney College
Formed in 1776 (six months before the Declaration of Independence) and named for John Hampden and Algernon Sydney, English patriots, it was brought into being by the love of liberty. Patrick Henry and James Madison were on the first board of trustees. President William Henry Harrison was a member of the class of 1791. The college is one of the leading educational institutions of the Presbyterian Church.
