On this site in 1796, Braxton Lee and family settled on 640 acres of land along the Cumberland River. In 1807 Lee was commissioned captain of the 20th Tennessee Regiment, Davidson Militia and served as Justice of the Peace for many years. Many early civic activities occurred on the hillside Homestead, built circa 1811. The Lowe, McQuary, and Adkisson families also lived on this site. Braxton Lee was the fourth-great grandfather of Governor William Byron “Bill” Lee.

Maps this old were drawn largely by eye, so places on them can sit miles from where they really are. The pin is ours and marks the marker's location today.

Example

For example, one family's tree showed the Articles of Confederation marker in Pennsylvania standing under a mile from where William Gabby lived in the 1760s.

What that marker records spans 1777 to 1789, overlapping William Gabby's years there.
