In the year 1790, Benjamin Darrow began operating a cotton gin and grist mill along Sycamore Creek, In 1835, on the site of the old Darrow Mill, Robert and Edward Cheatham along with Samuel Watson erected a powder mill which operated until the fall of Fort Donelson during the Civil War. Here in 1856 the first Cheatham County Court was held. The DuPont Co. acquired an interest in the mill in 1873 and it continued to operate until 1904.

Maps this old were drawn largely by eye, so places on them can sit miles from where they really are. The pin is ours and marks the marker's location today.

What that marker records spans 1777 to 1789, overlapping William Gabby's years there.
