Mount Olivet, the oldest Baptist Church in Wilson County was constituted on April 25, 1801. Until 1843, it was known as Big Cedar Lick Church. Begun in 1859, the native stone building, ¾ mile west, was finished after the Civil War. Slaves hauled the stones for the 2-foot thick walls on a lizard pulled by oxen, then lifted them with a gin pole.

Maps this old were drawn largely by eye, so places on them can sit miles from where they really are. The pin is ours and marks the marker's location today.

Example

For example, one family's tree showed the Articles of Confederation marker in Pennsylvania standing under a mile from where William Gabby lived in the 1760s.

What that marker records spans 1777 to 1789, overlapping William Gabby's years there.
