Carhartt Mansion

Front: Near this site are the ruins of the Carhartt Mansion, built in 1908-09 as a home for Hamilton Carhartt (1855-1937), founder of the Detroit-based overalls company. Carhartt first acquired land at this site in 1907 and developed it into an approx. 1000-acre cotton plantation that also bred horses and cattle. The cotton was used to produce denim at the Carhartt company’s textile mill in downtown Rock Hill and another mill built south of here in 1916-17. Reverse: During that period the surrounding area became known as Carhartt Station. It included the plantation, mill, mill village, post office, school, and Southern Railway passenger station. The Carhartt Mansion sat on a bluff overlooking the Catawba River. Carhartt sold the mansion and plantation in 1924. In 1925, a group of mainly local investors organized Red River Cotton Mills and purchased the nearby Carhartt mill. The mansion was dismantled in the 1950s.
